The three-day celebration includes “selfie” photo opps with the Aquarium’s animals, discounts for public transit riders, a Pacific Islander Festival, a live interaction with ocean explorers at sea, and a panel discussion with Planetary Radio host Mat Kaplan

WHAT: Show your love for the ocean, learn more about the ways we rely on the ocean and how human activity impacts ocean life, and investigate the current state of ocean exploration on World Ocean Day. The Aquarium of the Pacific will encourage visitors to share their love of the ocean and learn what they can do in their communities to protect it. The celebration will begin during the Aquarium’s annual Pacific Islander Festival in the weekend leading up to World Ocean Day, June 6 and 7. During the festival visitors will learn how plastic pollution in the ocean and sea level rise are adversely affecting Pacific Islands while also enjoying live music and dance performances, art, and island cuisine.

On June 8 special “selfie stations” will be set up around the Aquarium for guests to show their love of the ocean and their support of a “healthy ocean, healthy planet” using the hashtag #worldoceansday. Pose with our animals and divers to share your love of the ocean with friends on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. View shows in the Ocean Science Center highlighting sea level rise, ocean aquaculture, and ocean health. At 10:25 and 1:05 p.m. in the Aquarium’s Ocean Science Center, visitors will be able to interact with ocean explorers aboard the Nautilus, a research vessel at sea. Throughout the day in the Aquarium’s gift store, guests can take the Better Bottle Challenge to pledge to use reusable water bottles for the next year. At 7:00 p.m., the Aquarium will present a panel discussion with Mat Kaplan of Planetary Radio, Aquarium President and CEO Jerry Schubel, and Bill Patzert and Steve Vance, scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, to discuss how ocean exploration relates to space exploration.

Visitors who take public transit (Los Angeles Metro, Orange County Transportation Authority, and Long Beach Transit) to the Aquarium June 6 through 8 will receive $10 off regular adult admission by presenting proof at the ticket windows.

We are big fans of the Aquarium of the Pacific. Not only do we go every year around our daughter's birthday, we make special trips for special events. This is one of those EduFun trips I would have loved to be home schooling my kids for. Oh well, Only 2 weeks until summer... then we can play at the Aquarium when ever we can get there!
