2016 Imaginology Event at the OC Fair & Event Center

Costa Mesa, Calif. (February 18, 2016) — The OC Fair & Event Center welcomes students and their families to Imaginology April 15-17, 2016 with competitions, workshops and activities that will ignite young minds in the exciting fields of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.)
Themed “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead,” this free, annual event also features entertainment, exhibitors, vendors, design-your-own scarecrow and sawhorse contests, hands-on fun at the Centennial Farm, scavenger hunts and more.
Orange County students, grades pre-Kindergarten to high school, can showcase their talents in a variety of competitions for photography, film-making, fiber arts, computer graphics and more.
Imaginology features free admission for everyone and is open Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Visit ocfair.com/steam for more details.
This three-day event is an engaging and educational environment perfect for building up young minds to explore and achieve new goals through a variety of competitions. New this year, entries for the annual OC Fair Student Film Festival will be collected, judged and awarded during the Imaginology event. Winning entries will be shown during both events. All Imaginology Youth Project entries, including the Student Film Festival, must be registered online at ocfair.com/steam by Friday, March 25, 2016. All projects must be delivered by Thursday, April 7, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Free youth competitions include:
* 4th Annual OC Fair Student Film Festival: Create an original animation, documentary, narrative or alternative film. Entries may be no longer than 40 minutes. Open to grades 7-12. Winning entries will be shown at Imaginology and the 2016 OC Fair.
* Cardboard engineering: Create dazzling and awe-inspiring projects by repurposing simple cardboard into rocket ships, furniture and more. Open to grades 5-12. Group projects also accepted. The Vasur Foundation is offering a $50 cash award for first place and $25 for 2nd place plus Most Innovative Project certificates for the best entries for grades 9 through 12.
* Make It With Clay: Shape it, mold it, spin it and showcase artistic talent. Open to grades 3-12 plus special needs students.
Motion (Time) Based Media: In five minutes or less, tell a funny, entertaining or heartwarming story through stop motion, claymation, animation or animated gifs. Open to grades Pre-K through 6. Group projects also accepted.
* Farmology: Create a farm animal critter or farm animal mask using recycled or repurposed material. Open to grades Pre-K through 2 plus special needs students.
* Fashionista: Creating an item of clothing unique and fun to wear. Open to grades 3-12 plus special needs students.
* Fiber Arts: Stitch, weave or knot a pattern or your own unique design in the Fiber Arts competition. Open to grades 3-12 plus special needs students.
* Fine Art Drawing: Create an original work of art using pencil, pen, ink, crayon, markers and more. Open to grades Pre-K through 12 plus special needs students.
* Fine Art Painting: Create an original masterpiece using watercolors, acrylics, or oils, paint. Open to grades Pre-K through 12 plus special needs students.
* Read and Draw: Draw or make a book cover that illustrates a book. Open to grades Pre-K through 6.
* Computer-Generated Art: Create a digital work of art or virtual world through any computer or digital software. Open to grades 5-12. Group projects also accepted.
* 3D Printed Art: Create a complex piece of art using a 3D printer. Open to grades 7-12.
* Jewelry: Create a dazzling piece of jewelry using stylish beads, wire, metal, glass, plastic, yarn, etc. Open to grades Pre-K through 12 plus special needs students.
* Kinetic Art: Make an original piece of artwork that moves. Open to grades Pre-K through 12 plus special needs students. Group projects also accepted.
* Digital Photography: Capture interesting scenes using digital or film photography. Open to grades Pre-K through 12 plus special needs students.
* Manipulated Photography: Change reality through photo editing to create polka dot roses, skateboarding hippos and more. Open to grades 5-12 plus special needs students.
* Poetry: Create a Haiku and an illustration to go with it. Open to grades 3-12 plus special needs students.
* Scarecrow Contest: Friends and families can team up to design and decorate a scarecrow. Dress it up as famous person or some unique character. Open to any group or family of any age. Free to enter with a $100 award for best entry.
* Sawhorse Contest: Decorate a sawhorse frame with creative and unique material to make a one-of-a-kind horse. Open to any group or family of any age. Free to enter with a $100 award for best entry.
* Upcycle It!: Take something old and make it new and turn an old tire into a chair, old pipes into a light or other upcycle creations. Open to grades 3-12 plus special needs students. The Vasur Foundation is offering a $50 cash award for first place and $25 for 2nd place plus Most Innovative Project certificates for the best entries for grades 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12.
* Wood & Metal: Build a 3D masterpiece from wood or metal. Open to grades 5-12.
Imaginology also offers a Pretend Farm with mini tractor rides, agricultural activities and farmer dress-up fun, scavenger hunts, tractor-pulled wagon rides, Bug Barn, baby chicks and other farm animals, leather stamping activity, interactive science and engineering toys, petting zoo and more!
